I woke up early this morning with a clear goal: To make the best body lotion for my own use. Believe it or not, I often run out of healthy moisturisers because focus on providing for customers often takes over everything and my own skin is neglected.

Who has the driest skin?
I have VERY dry skin and I wanted to create a lotion therefore, that would be quick and easy to make, but that would also do a great job of locking in moisture that could last all day.
This was a small batch, just 1 lb, but the recipe can be doubled or tripled accordingly.
If you have never made your own lotions before, the ingredients are divided into two phases: a Water phase and an oil phase. Everything is heated and then, eventually combined. Near the end of the process, fragrance and preservative are added. It’s easy and satisfying because you can use the lotion right away, (which I did).
Why use natural oils?
Handmade lotions are created with natural oils (in this case, I used Sunflower oil and Organic Coconut Oil). These natural oils are able to sink deep into the layers of the skin to nourish and moisturise. Synthetic oils, such as mineral oil, which is commonly used in mass produced lotions and body butters, cannot sink into the skin as the molecular structure of mineral oil does not allow this type of absorption. In short, the molecules in mineral oil are too large to be absorbed this way. If you want a REAL moisturiser, not just a surface solution (see what I did there?) choose or create a handmade lotion made from natural oils.
I choose to include a preservative system in all my lotions. If you prefer not to use a preservative, I suggest you make small amounts (Lotion should be used in a few days) which you can put into the refrigerator, but I strongly endorse preservative use because I believe that the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.
Without further delay, here is the recipe: Please note that all ingredients are weighed
11 ounces distilled water.
2 ounces Sunflower Oil
2 ounces Organic Coconut Oil
0.8 ounce emulsifying wax
1 ounce stearic acid
PRESERVATIVE & FRAGRANCE
4 grams Phenonip * (tiny amount but effective)
0.25 ounce fragrance oil of your choice.
Weigh the distilled water, then heat it. Should be very hot but not necessarily boiling
Weigh the Sunflower Oil, Organic coconut oil, Emulsifying wax, Stearic acid in a mixing jug. Heat them up until everything is liquid.
When both phases of ingredients are heated, combine them. Place the oils into the water.
The mixture will turn white, opaque, but will be watery thin. Use the stick blender to combine well. As the mixture starts to cool, it will thicken.
Bubbles will be eliminated when the mixture is a thicker consistency.
Add the preservative (phenonip) and the fragrance oil last when the mixture has cooled, but can still be poured. Phenonip can be added when the temperature of the lotion is below 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Use the stick blender to ensure that these two ingredients are thoroughly incorporated into the lotion.
Finally, package your lotion. This recipe yields a fairly thick consistency lotion which sinks into the skin very quickly. Pump bottles are great for this one.
Beautiful labels finish the project well
Some quick tips:
SANITISE: All surfaces, tools, bowls that you intend to use. Everything must be CLEAN. Use a bleach solution or rubbing alcohol.
NEVER add preservative to a hot lotion. Wait until the mixture has cooled down. If you opt to use anther preservative, which you can, it is recommended that you add preservative at temperatures under 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
STIR near the end to remove air bubbles and froth.
